THE best thing about the antique and vintage business is the genuine joy you offer people!

A lot of what I write about is the memories and emotional attachments we all place on certain items.

As sellers, we get to see a lot of those moments when someone sees something from their past and their eyes light up and a big smile comes across their face.  Those moments are pure joy and it’s really fun to be a part of that.

Although our income depends on the amount of other people’s disposable income, we are on the receiving end of their “fun money”.  The money they can spend on themselves for something they really want and will enjoy for a long time to come.  With that, comes a very pleasant attitude.  There is a big difference between paying the electric bill and buying something fun for yourself.  One is an obligation, the other is a treat!

It still amazes me how someone can buy an item from us and thank us sincerely for making their day!

What a great business.

There are many elements that go into a successful antique/vintage business.  It’s kind of like a recipe for great cookies.  You start with the basics and “tweak” it as you go along.  Here are some of the basics…

• Clean, quality items in good shape.
• Fair pricing.
• Friendly service.
• Knowledgeable staff.
• Keen sense of what people want.

Mix these with a love of what you are doing and you should come up with an excellent business.
